Design is both an art and a science
Luminous Design Studio is founded and lead by Sarah Schlunegger, PhD. Sarah is a scientist and a designer, with a specialization in both urban and rural architecture. She has designed and developed eco-luxury estates in the pastoral hills of Texas, and sleek modern apartments in downtown Manhattan. Sarah has a passion and talent for designing and crafting spaces that work harmoniously with their surroundings, particularly with natural light, hence the company namesake, Luminous Design.
In New York City, her projects harness natural light, and offer a sophisticated and functional composition of furnishings, millwork, custom installations, art pieces and decor. In Texas, her projects showcase the best of sustainable architecture practices, capturing and storing rain water and working with the changing solar angles throughout the seasons to passively heat and cool.
Optimizing for both form and function, Sarah uses her scientific mind to think through the practicality, lifestyle implications and opportunities of each project, bringing together the details and the big-picture of how humans actually live, operate, feel comfort and experience beauty within a space.

Prior to starting her own architectural and interior design firm, Sarah received her PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (a.k.a. Climate Science) from Princeton University. During her PhD and as a Post-Doctoral Scientist at Princeton she worked on the design of NASA’s satellite observing systems, developing guidelines for where satellites should be placed, and how frequently satellites need to take measurements of the Earth’s surface in order to quickly detect the impacts of climate change.
Luminous Design Studio is headquartered in the Financial District of New York City. Contact us to book an appointment and talk about re-imaging your space.
